I must admit that I still agree with Rilke, who instructs us to; "read as little as possible of aesthetic criticism" and I still find that many reviews are either "partisan views or clever quibblings". I met Rose at the first Solitude Poetry event at Virginia Tech in February of 2013 and listened to her inspired reading while waiting to perform with my band in the front room of the oldest building on the Virginia Tech campus. Rose left a copy of Pastiche of Poetry for me at Solitude and I have been reading and enjoying it very much since then. Appalachia is a place where "time flows differently" and is still wilderness territory in regard to a regional literary identity and cultural understanding (or awareness) in many respects. Rose writes for a time as a new Appalachian, escaping the suburban DC/Maryland sprawl for the Mountains of Tennessee and finding her home there for a while.
I recall that Hermann Hesse asks; "Where is the center of events, the common standpoint around which they revolve and which gives them cohesion?" Pastiche of Poetry (written over five decades) is poetry at the heart of this center, this heart where Goethe noticed that "beauty rests content with itself". I was initially struck by the poems "Sylvia Plath" and "Please Understand". "November Fall" brings to mind many of Mattie Stepanek's Heartsongs of peace as well. "Tennessee Adoption" is a poem that celebrates an Appalachian homecoming after a long time of wandering around up North; "Appalachia adopt me, fortress my mountain home". I find a well-crafted poetry throughout the book, much like Hesse, Rilke or Szymborska has written, meant to keep you company on your long way home.
