Will is sixteen year old Lucy's best friend. Their lives intersect in dreams, where destiny pulls them together through different times in history. Even though their meetings are more real to Lucy than the present, Lucy is uncertain if Will exists outside her mind. Lucy's mum thinks there is something wrong when Lucy sleeps for days at a time. She is so caught up with finding a cure she doesn't see the real problem. Lucy is bullied at school and is thinking of ending her life. When the bullying goes too far and Lucy ends up in a coma, only Will can reach her. But how do you live when the only person who can save you doesn't exist?

If I Wake Nikki Moyes Books

I read this book twice. I thought it quite brilliant. I loved how the author interwove dreams, time travel, and possibly reincarnation to give meaning to life. The book has many layers, one of the signs of a good book, for me.

The main character, Lucy, is dealing with numerous life situations, none of which are good--bullying, a far from ideal home situation, and thoughts of suicide. But her dreams or recollections of past lives, or possibly just guardian angels showing her different life situations guide her through her present life by showing her both the past and the future.

In each life she encounters someone named Will. Although, she feels she is there to save him, he always imparts some specific wisdom to her to guide her in her present life. We are not even sure if what she is experiencing is real, however, one of Will's pearls of wisdom is, "If I can make one person's life better by my being in it, than my life has been real and worthwhile."

The book has a powerful message and I would highly recommend it.

If I Wake Nikki Moyes Books Reviews

When I started reading this book, I thought it would simply be a fictional tale about lucid dreaming I could get lost in. I found out quite soon that it was closer to real life than I ever expected. Similar to the Netflix original "13 Reasons Why", this novel covers issues like bullying, depression, and suicide from the tormented's perspective. In truth, unless you've been on the receiving end of bullying, you really don't understand the damage to a person, both physically and emotionally. "If I Wake" is brilliantly written and offers a look into the coping mechanisms some people turn to when life proves too difficult. It's no different than a tortured writer who turns to storytelling to escape a pain most people don't understand.

I absolutely love this book and I recommend it to anyone who struggles with bullying, depression, suicidal thoughts, or trouble figuring out where they fit in the world.
For the first few chapters I was confused. But the writing was engaging and kept me reading. By the time I was half-way through the book, I didn't want to stop. The last third of the book took an unexpected turn into suicide which startled me. I thought this was a YA time travel book where an unloved heroine found friends in other time periods. But when the despair of the present time took over, the heroine began to seriously plan her suicide.

I am old enough to be the great grandmother of this high school heroine. I am surprised by how much I care about this character. About how the despair of her life comes through so clearly on the page. I found myself crying as I read it on the train. Each page of this book builds so that by the end, I was actively rooting for this girl to live.

A powerful page turner that shows how easily social rejection turns to despair and can turn to suicidal thinking.
The scope of this story surprised me, and I truly enjoyed the journeys it took me on. The research was well done, and the characters were three-dimensional and believable. There were times I got slightly confused on the time period, but that served to show the main character’s own confusion in her journey. The journey itself is worthy, and one I’ve been on a couple times myself in my younger days. I truly cried at the end, which holds a very important message to all.
If I wake was an amazing read. From a person who suffers from depression who had suicidal thoughts in the past reading this was difficult but I stuck with it. I found the story very intriguing and I loved how Will was the one person Lucy could count on. He gave her the family she had always wanted who loved and respected her for who she was without judgment.
I really hope the author writes more on this topic in the future and I can’t praise the author enough for putting the authors note and the resources available to those in crisis. I believe there isn’t enough information readily available out in the world.
Thanks for writing this! I believe it will help many others out there. I cried when I read the notes from the author at the end but it was happy tears.
I loved, loved, loved this book! The only drawback was that there were a handful of grammatical mistakes (mostly homonyms, although there was a kind of funny "habitual" instead of "habitable"). This book was very unique and blended elements of your typical high school, science fiction, and psychological dramas seamlessly. I can't believe this is Nikki Moyes's first book - WOW!

Lucy is a girl with no friends, who is bullied mercilessly at her school. She is poor and her mom works 3 jobs to support them, but doesn't seem to understand her daughter or care to make an effort to do so. On Lucy's 11th birthday - after no one comes to her birthday party - she falls asleep and wakes up far in the past. She is taken in by a prehistoric clan and understands for the first time what it's like to have a supportive family. She makes her first friend, Wu, and saves his sister from drowning. Then, she is killed in a lion attack, sacrificing herself to save Wu, and wakes up back in the real world, having been asleep for days. This becomes her birthday routine. It doesn't seem to happen every birthday, but she travels to many different eras and always Will and his sister and their mother are there, welcoming her as family and always she saves Will.

Lucy's real world life keeps getting worse and she becomes suicidal as the isolation and bullying become unbearable. She doesn't know if her dreams of Will and his family are real - if she's crazy, if he's an imaginary friend. But everything she is going through is for a purpose and her journey has been worth everything. It's a beautiful story - haunting, but full of love and redemption and hope. I simply can't give this book enough stars. I haven't loved a book this much in years and I immediately wanted to read it again.
